Building capacity and capability for quality improvement: developing an organisational approach

Updated: Jan 12

Summary:

This article describes how East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) built a successful quality improvement training programme. They realised that people need different levels of training depending on their job, so they used a "dosing" approach. This means a ward manager might do a short introductory course, while someone leading quality improvement across the Trust would do a much more in-depth programme.

ELFT has trained thousands of staff, and their evaluation shows the programmes are effective. They recommend other NHS organisations do the following:

  • Tailor training: Use a dosing approach.

  • Standardise training: This saves time and improves quality.

  • Use experts:  Get experienced people to design and deliver training.

  • Build a community: Encourage networking and support.

  • Make it relevant: Help people apply learning to their jobs.

  • Get managers on board: Support from managers is crucial
